The 16th century is also evidence of a break with the previous century in shoe fashion: The modern age began with the emergence of a new shoe shape...
Cow-mouth shoes developed as an impulse against beak shoes. After they had lost their status function due to their spread throughout society, they were replaced by cow mouths. These were given their unflattering name because of their blunt angular shape. They continued to develop and in their late phase received small horns on the sides, the so-called horn shoes.
